Following Carlos Sainz, it’s now George Russell who’s been spotted and he’s behind the wheel of his brand-new Mercedes-AMG One, seen cruising through Monaco. There’s no doubt this incredible machine was delivered straight from his employer, Mercedes-AMG. The AMG One remains a rare sight on the streets, and Russell’s car is a welcome addition.
The Mercedes-AMG One is meant to be a road-legal interpretation of the Formula 1 cars developed by the Mercedes-AMG Formula 1 team. As expected, the powertrain is directly inspired by F1 tech: a 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 combined with electric motors, basically a Formula 1 engine tucked into a street car. But that turned out to be a bigger engineering challenge than expected. The car was originally unveiled eight years ago, and it took several years before the first customer deliveries actually began. One of the key hurdles? Emissions regulations. Eventually, just 375 units will be produced.
Aside from seeing Russell behind the wheel, there's another giveaway that the car is his: the license plate. It features the number 63, Russell’s F1 race number, and the letter G, likely standing for George.
Interestingly, in every photo of the AMG One, there's a Mercedes-Benz G-Class following closely behind, sporting a factory plate. Could that be a team of engineers tailing Russell, just in case the AMG One decides to call it quits? Wouldn’t be the first One to struggle with reliability, these hypercars are known more for their engineering ambition than daily driving ease.
